The Trials of Aql inDune: Awakeningare a core part of the main story quests. The first two trials are relatively the same. You find a cave that has an altar in it, walk up to the altar, inhale some Spice, and then go through what can only be seen as a Spice-fueled fever dream that teaches you about the Fremen.

However, the third trial is where the pattern starts to shift. It’s not particularly easy to find any of the trial caves, but the third one has extra paths leading up to the actual altar, and thetrial itself isn’t what you’re used to from the previous ones.
Finding the Third Trial
Much like the second trial, you need to reach the quest “Moving On” andcross into the Vermilion Gapbefore you can reach the trial. However, if you’ve already completed the second trial, but haven’t done the immediate quests after it, you can still just go right to the third trial and complete it on your quest log ahead of time.
The cave you want to find is theCave of the Lost Pilgrimon the west side of the Vermilion Gap. Like other trial caves, the entrance is at the bottom of the cliffside. However, you’ll likely end up having to face a number of enemies to reach the altar. Then, there are paths that make you drop underground, which you’ll then use your suspension belt to get back out of after the trial.
Completing the Third Trial
Once you spot the altar, you notice that it’s not the same as the last two trials. Instead of walking up to a dish of Spice and inhaling it, you find that the altar has been destroyed and there’s no Spice waiting for you. However, there’s a recording sitting on the right side of where the altar once was.Listen to the recording, and the Third Trial of Aql is marked complete.
It can feel a bit strange to complete the trial just by listening to a recording rather than going through a whole journey with Spice, but this acts as your first turning point in the trials where you start to realize that the rest of them aren’t going to be easy in Dune: Awakening.
