The cast ofThe Mandalorianis starting to take shape. The first ever live-actionStar WarsTV series has been in production since early last month, but casting details weren’t revealed when Lucasfilm announced the show was getting underway. The studio is still doing their best to keep the veil of secrecy up, but we’ve learned that another new cast member in the form of Gina Carano has joined a galaxy, far, far away in an unspecified role.
According to several reports, Gina Carano has boardedThe Mandalorianas a key cast member. Beyond that, everything else about her involvement remains mysterious. Her previous credits includeDeadpool,Fast and Furious 6andHaywire. Prior to her career in Hollywood, Carano trained in mixed martial arts and worked as a fitness model.She joins Pedro Pascal(Narcos,Game of Thrones), who is set to play the lead in the series. Though, Lucasfilm has also been mum on officially announcing his involvement. There were also reports stating thatCarl Weathers(Rock,Predator) has been tapped for a role.
What we know for sure is that the seriestakes place in the Outer Rim, far from the reaches of the galaxy’s law and order.The Mandalorianis set after the events ofReturn of the Jediand prior toThe Force Awakens, following a lone gun for hire as he makes his way through the galaxy. Jon Favreau (Iron Man,The Jungle Book) serves as writer and executive producer of the series. Dave Filoni, known for his work onThe Clone WarsandRebelsanimated shows, will make his live-action Star Wars debut and direct the first episode.
Other directors includeTaika Waititi(Thor: Ragnarok), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones) and Bryce Dallas Howard, who has mostly helmed shorts up to this point. But her father, Ron Howard, did directSolo, for what that may be worth. It’s also been reported that both Waititi and Howard will have minor roles in the series. Waititi is said to be playing a droid. It’s also expected thatJon Favreau, who also had a minor but not-insignificant role inSolo, may take on a small role in the series as well.
The Mandalorianwill debut on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+, which is set to launch in late 2019. No specific release date for the series is been set. It’s also unclear at the present time if Disney will release one episode at a time, or if they will dump the entire season at once to allow for binge-watching, like Netflix. The company also announced recently that Diego Luna will reprise his role as Cassian Andor fromRogue Onein a prequel series, also to be produced for Disney+.
