A haunting new motion poster for upcoming comic book outingThe Batmanrequests that you question everything. Shared to social media byThe BatmandirectorMatt Reeves, the poster gives us another look atRobert Pattinsonas the titular DC icon, as the shape of his iconic cowl slowly transforms into a question mark, ushering in the arrival of Paul Dano’s serial killer, The Riddler.
Once again leaning into the red and black colour palette that much of the marketing material forThe Batmanhas used, the motion poster teases the darkly atmospheric comic book outing that directorMatt Reeveshas created. Audiences have been waiting some time forThe Batmanto arrive, with several pushbacks and delays only heightening the already palpable anticipation. The Batmanwill introduce audiences to an early version of the costumed vigilante, picking up two years into his crusade against Gotham City’s criminal underworld. With only a few trusted allies at his side, including Alfred Pennyworth and James Gordon, amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

Suddenly,The Batmanmeets his greatest threat so far, The Riddler, a killer who has begun murdering key Gotham elites and leaving tricksy riddles at the scene. This trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman, Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin, Carmine Falcone, and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler. The mission will set Batman on a collision course with his past, as the evidence begins to lead closer to home. Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
The Batmanwas recently described as being a standalone adventure, rather than the franchise spawning outing that the comic book movie franchise has become known for.Director Matt Reeves also compared Pattinson’s Caped Crusader to an unexpected real-life figure of tragedy, Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. “That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse. So I started making this connection to Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, and the idea of this fictionalized version of Kurt Cobain being in this kind of decaying manor,” Reeves revealed.
“In that movie you could really feel his vulnerability and desperation, but you could also feel his power,” he continued. “I thought that was a great mix. He’s also got that Kurt Cobain thing, where he looks like a rock star, but you also feel like he could be a recluse.”
The Batmanstars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/The Batman, alongsideZoë Kravitzas Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Colin Farrell as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot/Penguin, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.
