With allthe buzz building for Summer Games Festand all the reveals and announcements its bringing, it can be easy to forget that there are many exciting releases already rounding the corner.Final Fantasy XVI is one,and now it’s confirmed that Apogee Entertainment’s and Nightdive Studio’s Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition is another. It’ll be bringing back all of the classic FPS' insane action to PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch on July 31. Even better, those curious about trying it will be able to on July 19 via a Shareware demo!
As those who’ve been following the game are no doubt aware, Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition isn’t just a re-release of the original 90’s version. Certainly all it’s back and remastered to 4K specs, but this edition also allows for an unlimited frame rate comes packed with all of the expansion as well.
Further, the studio has apparently restored and integrated content from at least some of Rise of the Triad’s “lost” betas, added an all-new level editor, made it possible to swap between the 1995 and 2013 soundtracks, and even created a new episode just for this release. Of course, both online and LAN multiplayer are also supported. Altogether, it’s about as definitive as a “definitive” edition can be.
Those who are fans of the original Rise of the Triad almost surely don’t need any convincing here, but what about those who’ve never even heard of this 90s FPS? Well, it’s nothing if not unique to say the least. Players have their choice of five different characters, all members of the elite “HUNT” (High-risk United Nations Task-force). They mostly only differ in terms of HP, speed and accuracy, but it’s still enough to end up with a favorite. Their initial mission was simply to investigate a cult operating out an island near LA, but that mission changes once they learn about the cult’s goals and their only way off the island gets destroyed.
From their the mission changes from “investigate” to “annihilate,” and the agents have an arsenal of thirteen conventional and magical weapons with which to do so. Enemies will use the standard rush tactics, but others will try to play dead or even beg for their lives once they see some of their buddies get gibbed by a missile launcher or mauled by an agent under the effects of “Dog Mode.” Yup, there’s a “dog mode” power-up in Rise of the Triad and it’s not even the craziest one on offer.
Even if one isn’t all that into early FPS, Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition should have at least enough novelty to make it worth trying out the demo once it’s out on July 19.
