Sony has released its financial results for the third quarter of the fiscal year 2020, which has resulted in PS5 shipping 4.5 million units.
PS5 Shipped 4.5 Million Units in 2020; PS4 Has Now Shipped 115 Million Units
Sony has released itsfinancial results for the third quarter ending in December 2020, which reports the figures from October 1st to December 31st, 2020. In this report, they have divulged the figures for the number of units shipped for PS5. The new console only launched in November, but has already sold 4.5 million.
If you compare that to how many PS4 were sold, 1.4 million units were purchased worldwide during that time. This adds to the grand total of PS4 sold, making it now 115 million units since its launch.

Playstation Plus subscriptions are also on the rise, with now 47.7 million as of August 18, 2025, which is 8.6 million more than the same period of the previous fiscal year.
Software has of course seen a rise as the release of the Playstation 5 at the end of 2020, which has now made a combined total of 103.7 million units sold. Of that number 18.4 million units were first-party titles, which is up from the previous fiscal year. No doubt this would include the recent release of the Demon’s Souls remaster which launched with the new console.

Things seem to be on the up with the console, even though there are still shortages of the console since its launch. Now in 2021 hopefully those who are eager to get their hands on the console will be able to. If the console had a smoother launch, it may have seen even higher numbers, but we’ll have to wait and see how it does this year, with more titles launching later for the console.
Just last month inJapan, Sony had announced they would be halting the production of all PS4 modelsexcept for the PS4 slim in order to increase the production of the PS5.
Earlier in January, Sony’s CES trailer released first announcing anumber of third-party title release dates/release windows, but was shortly then after updated with only keeping first-party titles such as Returnal with their subsequent release dates.
