Peaky Blinders
A British ganagster saga set in 1919 post-war Birmingham. Cillian Murphy is Thomas Shelby, leader of the most feared and powerful local gang, the Peaky Blinders. Named for their practice of sewing razor blades into the peaks of their caps, they make money from illegal betting, protection and the black market. But when a crate of guns goes missing from an arms factory, their battle-hardened leader recognizes an opportunity to move up in the world.
Tom Harper will direct the movie based on a script by Knight, who has now revealed thatthe story is set during World War II. Netflix greenlit the project in June, though plot details remain under wraps. The series was inspired by a real-life gang that reportedly terrorized the city of Birmingham, England, from the 1880s to the 1920s. The movie has been described as “an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning, six-season gangster saga”. PerVariety, Knight said:
“When I first directed ‘Peaky Blinders’ over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. ‘Peaky’ has always been a story about family – and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix,”
When Will the Peaky Blinders Movie Debut on Netflix?
Harper will executive produce thePeaky Blindersmovie alongside Murphy, David Kosse, Jamie Glazebrook, Andrew Warren, and David Mason, in collaboration with BBC Film.Production is slated to begin soon, but no release date has been confirmed. What’s On Netflix also reports that filming is expected to start around September 27 at Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham city center, with Netflix sharing a photo of the scripton X(formerly Twitter) back in June, along with a quote from Murphy:
“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version ofPeaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

Murphy stars as the formidable leader of the titular gang and, at the end of the sixth season, he faces a critical choice: seek revenge against his enemies or embrace a life where he is presumed dead. Season 6 ended on July 16, 2025, and instead of moving forward with a seventh season, Knight opted to wrap up the story with a feature film instead.
The upcomingfilm is one of severalPeaky Blindersprojectsthe streamer is currently developing, with one set in 20th-century Boston while the other will be a prequel series centered on Polly, the Shelby family matriarch, who was played throughout the series by Helen McCrory, who sadly passed away in 2021.
