The quirky cult RPG series Neptunia Re;Birth is making its way onto the North American and European Nintendo eShops this Summer. There’s no official eShop page just yet, but we know that the games are going to release on May 21. This is the first time since the original PS Vita release that fans will get to play the Neptunia essentials on the go.
What’s Included?
There are three games included in the collection: Hyperdimension Neptunia: Re;Birth 1, Hyperdimension Neptunia: Re;Birth 2 Sisters Generation, and Hyperdimension Neptunia: Re;Birth 3 V Generation. Explaining the full Hyperdimension Neptunia timeline is far beyond what I am capable of here (there are almost thirty games in the franchise depending on how you count them), but what I can tell you is that each of the Re;Birth titles is either an updated or remade version of an older game.

Gon and Killua look raring to go.
The Neptunia games are RPGs that take place in the world of Gamindustri (game industry, get it?). Gamindustri is divided into four regions, each modeled on a specific video game console. Each region also has its deity-esque “CPU”, a goddess who embodies the region’s console. They are Planeptune (the canceled Sega Neptune), Lastation (the Playstation), Lowee (the Wii) and Leanbox (the Xbox).

Console Wars
Naturally, the world is chaos and all the regions and goddesses are at war with one another. Eventually, one of the CPUs, Neptune, is defeated by the others and banished from the heavens. Her memories are lost, but a mysterious book reveals itself to her with knowledge of all of Gaminudstri’s history and that’s where the first game kicks off. Armed with this new knowledge, Neptune (with the help of a magical grimoire) must embark on an extraordinary journey to save the world.
The second game concerns Arfoire Syndicate of International Crime, a sinister criminal group out to conquer Gamindustri, and the third game is all about escaping from the 1980s (it’s a long story). Aggressively off-beat as it may be, there’s an undeniable charm to the world and characters, especially if you have a higher-than-average tolerance for anime.

Gameplay-wise the Neptunia games are old school dungeon crawling RPGs crossed with visual novels. There’s alotof text, so bear that in mind if you’re thinking about jumping in. There are a lot of unique mechanics too, like editable combos and character transformations. You probably won’t have played anything like any of these games before.
If you want something utterly unique to play on the go, this is the collection for you. You won’t have to wait long to get stuck in either.
