After breaking fund-raising record on Kickstarter, one might think that it would be smooth sailing ahead for System Shock Remastered. Unfortunately, that’s not been the case.
What is System Shock, anyway?
System Shock is a first-person action game which was developed by Looking Glass Technologies and published by Origin Systems in 1994. It’s set aboard a space station in 2072. Players take on the role of a hacker who tries to defeat an evil AI named SHODAN.
It was a highly influential game and the much beloved BioShock games are the spiritual successors to System Shock. So it wasn’t too surprising to see the Kickstarter campaign go well. Unfortunately, development has since hit a snag.

System Shock Remastered put on hiatus by Nightdive Studios
It raised more than $1.3 million on Kickstarter from more than 20,000 backers. However, the developer has recently announced that the project’s on hiatus. Stephen Kick, head of Nightdive Studios, said that they need to take a step away and get the project back on track, as the team attempted to do too much.
“We put together a development team and began working on the game. But along the way something happened… We moved… to a completely new game. We shifted engines from Unity to Unreal, a choice that we don’t regret and one that has worked out for us. With the switch we began envisioning doing more, but straying from the core concepts of the original title… As our concept grew and as our team changed, so did the scope of what we were doing and with that the budget for the game… I have put the team on a hiatus while we reassess our path so that we can return to our vision. We are taking a break… Please accept my personal assurance that we will be back and stronger than ever. System Shock is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled.” - Stephen Kick, Nightdive Studios.
Hopefully it is just a temporary delay. With so many backers behind it, it would be such a shame should this game not be made. So, were you one of the backers? Are you looking forward to System Shock Remastered or are you content with the original? Please comment below and let us know.
