All of Apple’s iPhone models come equipped with a side-mounted ringer/silent switch that makes silencing your device’s incoming notification sounds so effortless that it can be done right from your pocket. But as we witnessed ina popular /r/jailbreak request postfrom this past week, a sizable portion of iPhone users would come to appreciate the ability to repurpose the ringer/silent switch as a physicalDo Not Disturbtoggle switch.
The aforementioned idea seemed like a good idea even to me when I read about it earlier in the week, but now that a new and freejailbreak tweakcalledDnDSwitchby iOS developersmokin1337officially exists, I can genuinely say that I welcome the concept even more than I did just a few days ago when I read about it on Reddit.
As noted on DnDSwitch’s depiction page, the tweak was quite literally created in response to the /r/jailbreak-based request, and it works exactly how you’d expect it to – turning the ringer/silent switch to the silent position enables Do Not Disturb mode, while turning the ringer/silent switch to the ringer position disables Do Not Disturb mode.
I like this idea because toggling Do Not Disturb on is already going to have an effect similar to silencing my incoming notifications, but it comes with the additional benefit of making notifications less annoying when I’m actually in the process of using my device as opposed to just having it in my pocket. Likewise, turning Do Not Disturb mode off allows me to see and hear those notifications again, so it’s a 360-degree win.
Once installed, DnDSwitch adds a dedicated preference pane to the Settings app where you may toggle the tweak on or off on demand in its entirety:
For what it’s worth, the functionality provided to end users by DnDSwitchcan already be achievedvia Ryan Petrich’s tried and trueActivatorextension. With that in mind, if you’re already using Activator, then you may not need to download DnDSwitch. On the other hand, those who’d prefer a lightweight alternative to installing Activator will find that DnDSwitch gets the job done and doesn’t add any icons to the Home Screen.
