Gunlance Best skills- InMonster Hunter Wilds, the satisfying gameplay loop of hunting monsters to get loot to craft stronger gear to hunt strongermonstersmakes a grand return. And with this grand return also comes the return of a variety of skills that come with the equipment you will be forging and using in your hunts.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, there are a total of 148Skillsthat have unique effects, and each one of them is helpful in a particular aspect when you are playing the game. A lot of the skills that were in the previous games make a return with a few newly added skills.

The biggest change to skills in Monster Hunter Wilds is that some of the Equipment skills that were on the armor pieces in the previous games have been moved to the weapons. This particular change makes it so that you will not be locked into specific monster trees when using a particular weapon.
In this guide, we will be taking a look at the skills that will bring out the Gun Lance’s full potential during your hunts.

The Gunlance is a weapon that centers around its multiple shelling options and defensive capabilities. It can be a devastating explosive weapon that quickly takes down monsters while providing a decent defensive option. As such, the best skills for the Gunlance are those that enhance its explosive power, allowing it to make its mark with a blast.

The best skills to have in your loadout when using the Gunlance includeArtillery, Load Shells, Offensive Guard, Guard Up, Maximum Might, and Flayer. The Artillery, Load Shells, Offensive Guard, and Guard Up skills are equipment skills that can be found on the weapons, while Maximum Might and Flayer are skills that can be found on armor pieces.
Artillery– The Artillery skill increases the strength of explosive attacks, including Wyvern’s Fire and shells for the Gunlance. Since the shellings and Wyvern’s Fire attacks are the main sources of damage for the Gunlance, this skill is invaluable. It also increases the firing rate of the Wyvern’s Fire cannon blast, lessening the chance of being in animation lock when firing the blast at times when you need to dodge a huge attack.

Load Shells
Load Shells– The Load Shells skill increases both the reloading speed and the Gunlance’s shell capacity. Although the increased capacity is nice, the boost in reload speed is invaluable, as you will be reloading often during your attacks and during the Multi-Wyvern blast combo, which requires reloading twice. Faster reload speed means you’re able to pull off the full combo much more quickly.
Offensive Guard
Offensive Guard– The Offensive Guard skill gives a temporary increase in attack power after performing a perfect guard, and you will be guarding quite often when using the Gunlance. Even though this skill only activates when you perform a perfect guard, the timing is not particularly difficult to pull off reliably with the Gunlance, making it possible to have the skill active for the majority of your hunt.
Guard Up– The Guard Up skill improves your guarding abilities, making it possible to block attacks that were previously unblockable, such as monster roars and some of the big attacks monsters execute when furious. This skill works extremely well with the Gunlance’s slow, low-mobility nature, allowing you to tank most hits instead of having to dodge every time. It also reduces incoming damage by up to 80% at max level. However, keep in mind that even with this skill, you will still need to dodge the strongest attacks (for example, Rey Dau’s concentrated Lightning Blast or Ajarakan’s Lava Wave explosion).

Maximum Might
Maximum Might– The Maximum Might skill increases your affinity when your stamina is kept full for a period of time. At max level (level 3), when the skill activates, it increases affinity by up to 30%. This increase in affinity lets you deal even more damage, and when using the Gunlance, this skill will be active most of the time since you will be blocking off all but the strongest of the monster’s attacks.
Flayer– The last skill in the best tier is Flayer, which is amazing because it makes it easier to inflict wounds on the monster. Destroying these wounds opens up opportunities to fire off Wyvern’s Fire without worrying about getting hit, allowing you to lock in the animation. This attack pattern—inflicting wounds, destroying them, and then following up with a Wyvern’s Fire cannon blast—leads to huge amounts of damage when using the Gunlance.

These skills enhance the Gunlance’s moveset, allowing you to deal massive damage with a constant barrage of shellings and cannon strikes. Although you can choose between Gunlances that offer Load Shells, Offensive Guard, and Guard Up skills, none come with a built-in Artillery skill. You will have to rely on decorations to obtain Artillery while choosing a Gunlance that offers the skills you like best.
Second Best Tier Skills for the Gunlance
These sets of skills will help the hunting using the Gunlance as they reinforce certain aspects of the weapon but compared to the skills in the best tier, they will land just short of being able to offer maximum value.
Partbreaker
Partbreaker– The Partbreaker skill increases the damage you deal to the weak parts of the monster—such as the head and tail—and also boosts the damage when you destroy wounds inflicted on the monster during the hunt. This skill is outstanding for the Gunlance as it still offers a respectable increase in the weapon’s damage output. The only reason it is not in the best tier is that the long wind-up time of the Wyvern’s Fire cannon attacks and the short range of the shellings make it difficult for the Gunlance to reliably land its attacks on the weak spots if the monster is not toppled.
Stamina Surge
Stamina Surge– The Stamina Surge skill increases the stamina regeneration rate, and at max level (level 3), it boosts regeneration by 50%. This is amazing for the Gunlance because blocking the monster’s attacks drains stamina, and this skill allows the stamina bar to refill quickly while you are executing combos or the Wyvern’s Fire cannon attack, taking away the need to worry about your stamina bar.
Recovery Up&Recovery Speed
Recovery Up and Recovery Speed– These skills can help Gunlance users during their hunts. The Recovery Up skill increases the amount you heal from all sources, while the Recovery Speed skill speeds up the rate at which you regain the red portion of your health bar. Having these skills will improve your chances of survival during hunts by helping you recover from some of the big attacks your guard cannot fully block.
While the second-tier skills may not enhance the entire moveset of the Gunlance, they will still help considerably when farming for the parts needed to build the strongest possible loadout.
Optional skills for the Gunlance
These skills can be helpful when using the Gunlance as your primary weapon, but they will not do much to enhance the Gunlance’s strong points. As such, these skills are good to have when you have a free slot after putting together your strongest possible skills.
Constitution
Constitution– The Constitution skill reduces the stamina depletion of actions such as evades and blocks. Since you will be blocking quite often when using the Gunlance, this skill can provide value in helping with your stamina management, especially if you do not have the Stamina Surge skill.
Attack Boost
Attack Boost– The Attack Boost skill is a good option if you don’t have the decorations needed for your favorite skills yet. The raw increase in this stat will help during your hunts by increasing overall physical damage output with your shellings and thrusts. At max level, it will increase the already high attack value of the Gunlance by 4%, in addition to the +9 increase in the stat.
Quick Sheathe
Quick Sheathe– The Quick Sheathe skill greatly increases your weapon sheathing speed, which can be very beneficial for the Gunlance since it has one of the slowest weapon sheathing speeds in the game. Having this skill will help in instances where you quickly need to sheathe your weapon and dodge out of the way of the monster’s huge attacks that you cannot block.
So, these are the best skills to use with the Gunlance in bringing out its full potential in my opinion. I hope you find this helpful.
