In the 28 years sinceBeetlejuicefirst hit theaters, fans have been clammoring for a sequel. Over the past few years, there have been a number of exciting developments, withMichael KeatonandWinona Ryderreportedly set to return as the title character and Lydia Deetz, with originalBeetlejuicedirectorTim Burtonreturning to directBeetlejuice 2from a script bySeth Grahame-SmithandDavid Katzenberg. Still, we haven’t heard anything official about the movie actually moving forward into production, and it seems that may not happen anytime soon.

The last we heard about this sequel was back in March, whenTim Burtonrevealed that Warner Bros. has approved the script and greenlit the production, withMichael Keaton,Winona Ryderand other unspecified cast members set to return. The filmmaker revealed that everything was ready, and they just needed to start filming, but it was unclear when that may take place. During a new interview withCollider, the filmmaker backtracked on those earlier comments, revealing that nothing is set in stone quite yet. Here’s what he had to say below.

BeetleJuice 2

“This is the thing, it’s something that I’m interested in, but there’s so many stories [online], dumpingMichael KeatonforJohnny Deppand this or that, and I’ve talked to these people and they didn’t wanna hear this so they just made up a story. But the fact of it is I have talked toMichaeland I have talked toWinona, I’ve talked to a few people. It’s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it’s one of those films where it has to be right. It’s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel], it’s not theBeetlejuicetrilogy. So it’s something that if the elements are right-because I do love the character and Michael’s amazing as that character, so yeah we’ll see. But there’s nothing concrete yet.”

It isn’t known if there is still more work being done on the script, or what changed between now and March, when the filmmaker said that everything was in place for production to start. Warner Bros.' hasn’t issued an official release date at this time, and it isn’t even known if this will be his next movie. His latest movie,Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Childrenis set for release by 20th Century Fox on September 30, and he is also attached to direct a live actionDumbomovie for Disney. We haven’t had any updates onDumbosinceTim Burtonsigned on to direct last March, so we don’t know for sure when that will move forward.
