After several years of delays, Universal is finally moving forward with theirUntitled Mummy Reboot. Last month, the studio confirmed thatTom Cruiseis set to star, withSofia Boutellaportraying the title creature, and the studio setting a June 9, 2017release date. Today we have word fromThe Hollywood ReporterthatAnnabelle Wallishas signed on to play the female lead alongsideTom Cruise.
The site reports thatTom Cruiseis playing “a special forces soldier (or former soldier)” in thereboot, which is set in modern-day. The previousMummymovies starringBrendan Fraserwere all period pieces, but this project will fall in line with 2014’sDracula Untold, which ended with a prologue that brought the title character into present day. TheUntitled Mummy Rebootwill be the first movie in the studio’s newmonster universethat will be set entirely in present day.
Varietyreports that Annabelle Wallis is playing an archaeologist in the movie, although no further details about her character were made available. The studio hasn’t released any official plot details as of yet, but a rumor surfaced in October 2014 that claimed the story centers onNavy SEALSin Iraq. That report was never confirmed, but now that the cast is starting to come together, hopefully the studio will reveal a plot synopsis soon.
Sofia Boutellawill play the title creature, marking the first time in Universal history that a female has portrayed the Mummy. Universal’s original 1932 classicThe Mummystarred Boris Karloff as the title character, withArnold Voslootaking over the role for the studio’s 1999 remake The Mummy and its 2001 sequelThe Mummy Returns.Jet Listepped in to portray The Mummy in 2008’sThe Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
